In a determined move to combat the influx of substandard products nationwide, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) convened a crucial sensitization workshop in Asaba on Friday, May 9th, 2025. The forum aimed to galvanize stakeholders from diverse sectors on the critical importance of upholding quality standards through self-regulation and ethical practices.
The Director General/Chief Executive, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, emphasized that standardization and quality assurance are collective responsibilities demanding strong collaboration between public and private sector players. Represented by the Director, SON Corporate Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Talatu Ethan, the DG implored participants to:
Actively embrace self-regulatory conduct within their operations.
Support market associations as effective platforms for peer enforcement of standards.
Champion ethical behavior across all industry sectors.
Ensure that only certified, high-quality products are traded and utilized.
Mrs. Talatu reiterated the DG’s powerful call to action, urging everyone – manufacturers, traders, importers, exporters, and all stakeholders – to “do the right thing” in their respective roles to safeguard product quality and consumer safety.
The Head, SON South-South Region, Mrs. P. O. Kussy-Wanza, in her remarks warmly welcomed participants and clearly articulated the workshop’s objective, which is to significantly reduce the prevalence of substandard goods in the Nigerian market.
The Group Head, Mechanical Engineering at SON, Engr. I. P. Ega enlightened attendees on the profound impact of SON’s activities on the nation’s economic advancement. Dr. T. Oni, the Head of the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Department at Delta State Polytechnic, delivered a compelling presentation on fostering a culture of quality and standards through proactive self-regulatory measures and robust ethical codes.
The interactive session saw participants raise pertinent questions, which were thoroughly addressed by SON representatives. A recurring sentiment among stakeholders was a strong demand for increased sensitization and awareness campaigns at the grassroots level to effectively tackle the issue of substandard products.
This workshop underscores SON’s proactive approach to partnering with stakeholders in building robust, quality infrastructure that protects consumers and fosters sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
