ABOUT SONMELS

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria Mandatory Energy Labeling Scheme (SONMELS) is a comprehensive conformity assessment framework designed to support the implementation of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for electrical appliances intended for the Nigerian markets.

SONMELS establishes mandatory energy performance standards and energy labeling requirements for selected appliances pursuance to section 5(1)(h) and section 49(1) of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act, 2015, which empowers the Organization to establish product conformity assessment schemes.

OBJECTIVES

  • Reduce energy demand and operating costs of appliances.
  • Empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions with the star rating energy efficiency information.
  • Incentivize manufacturers to invest in energy-efficient technologies.
  • Support Nigeria’s climate mitigation objectives for environmental protection and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

                  SONMELS REGULATIONS (Draft)

REQUEST FOR COMMENTS ON THE DRAFT STANDARDS ORGANISATION OF NIGERIA (MANDATORY ENERGY LABELLING SCHEME) REGULATIONS, 2026

I am directed to convey the warm greetings of the Director General/Chief Executive of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and to inform you that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), pursuant to its mandate under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act No. 14, 2015, has developed the draft Standards Organisation of Nigeria Mandatory Energy Labeling Scheme (SONMELS) Regulations, 2026.

The Regulations establish mandatory Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labelling requirements for regulated appliances, with the aim of promoting energy efficiency, protecting consumers, and ensuring that only compliant appliances are offered on the Nigerian market.

As a valued stakeholder, your input is important to the Organisation. Accordingly, we are pleased to forward a copy of the draft Regulations for your review and invite your comments and observations. For ease of access, the draft Regulations may also be downloaded from the SON official website at (https://son.gov.ng/son-mandatory-energy-labeling-scheme/).

To facilitate the timely collation of responses ahead of the scheduled stakeholder consultation events, kindly submit your comments using the Comment Form enclosed herewith, on or before 14th August, 2026 by email to sonmels@son.gov.ng. The hard copies may also be sent to the Organization’s headquarters.

The Organisation will subsequently host two (2) stakeholder consultation meetings to present the draft Regulations, receive feedback, and address observations before the Regulation is finalized. The meetings will be held in Lagos and Abuja respectively. Kindly consider this letter as your formal invitation to attend either of the said meetings. Details of the venues, dates, and times will be communicated in due course.
