ABOUT SONMELS

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria Mandatory Energy Labeling Scheme (SONMELS) is a comprehensive conformity assessment framework designed to support the implementation of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for electrical appliances intended for the Nigerian markets.

SONMELS establishes mandatory energy performance standards and energy labeling requirements for selected appliances pursuance to section 5(1)(h) and section 49(1) of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act, 2015, which empowers the Organization to establish product conformity assessment schemes.

OBJECTIVES

  • Reduce energy demand and operating costs of appliances.
  • Empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions with the star rating energy efficiency information.
  • Incentivize manufacturers to invest in energy-efficient technologies.
  • Support Nigeria’s climate mitigation objectives for environmental protection and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

Implementation Timeline

Voluntary Implementation Phase

Optional certification period for early compliance for appliances within Phase I scope, from launch till December 2026.

Mandatory Implementation Phase I

Full enforcement requiring all appliances within Phase I scope to display energy labels for market access by December 2026.

Mandatory Implementation Phase II

Full enforcement requiring all appliances within Phase II scope to display energy labels for market access by December 2026.
