SON ORGANIZED NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BUILDING CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, EMPHASIZES STANDARD PRACTICES AS KEY TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

 

The National Conference on the Building Construction Industry, hosted by the Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi C. Okeke brought together prominent leaders, stakeholders, and professionals from across the construction sector. Themed “Adherence to Standard Practices – Bedrock of Sustainable Development in the Building Construction Industry,” the conference underscored the critical importance of adherence to Standards for the safety, sustainability, and growth of Nigeria’s building industry.

The Honorable Minister of State for Industry, in the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh declared the Conference Open. In his remarks, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for cooperation across the construction industry to enhance safety measures and prevent the tragic building collapses that have become all too common in recent years. He called on industry stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and professionals to prioritize compliance with established standards to secure public safety and foster sustainable development within the sector.

The event saw a huge turnout from construction professionals, stakeholders, and representatives of regulatory bodies, all of whom engaged in discussions on how adherence to standards can support Nigeria’s economic growth and infrastructural development. Experts from various fields presented papers covering critical issues, including best practices in building design, structural integrity, sustainable materials, and risk management.

A highlight of the conference was the panel discussion, which featured notable voices from professional bodies, government regulatory agencies, and key players in the construction industry. The panelists shared insights into current challenges, innovative solutions, and best practices, driving home the message that building safety and sustainability are shared responsibilities across the industry.

At the conclusion of the conference, a communique outlining key resolutions was agreed on, including recommendations for stricter enforcement of building standards, the need for enhanced collaboration among regulatory bodies, and strategies for improving public awareness about the importance of construction standards. The communique reaffirmed SON’s commitment to working alongside industry players to foster a culture of safety and excellence in Nigeria’s building sector.

The National Conference on the Building Construction Industry represents a pivotal step toward aligning Nigeria’s construction practices with global standards, ensuring that the country’s infrastructure development remains safe, sustainable, and resilient.
