SON DG CALLS FOR SWIFT ACTION ON MOU AS NMDPRA CEO PAYS HIM A VISIT

 

The Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, warmly welcomed the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed, and his team during their strategic visit to SON. Dr. Okeke expressed his delight at the cordial and productive relationship between the two organisations emphasizing its significance in advancing Nigeria’s petroleum sector. He lauded the collaboration so far and reiterated the importance of expediting efforts to finalize their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

During the meeting, both parties agreed on the necessity of reviewing key specifications, particularly concerning modular refineries. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of aligning plans and concepts with practical considerations, especially regarding Sulphur content in petroleum products, to ensure that standards are both achievable and effective.

Safety standards also took center stage, with consensus reached on measures such as the colorization of petroleum products to enhance identification and compliance. It was recommended that a clear timeline for adherence to these standards be established to guide the industry. Both leaders agreed that the immediate implementation of ready standards is crucial, as any delays could potentially disrupt operations in the petroleum sector.

The visit further reinforced the commitment of both SON and NMDPRA to strengthen their partnership, with a shared goal of ensuring compliance, enhancing safety, and fostering sustainable practices in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
