Umaru Kawu is a 1984 law graduate of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

In 1985, he was enrolled as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He did his National Youth Service in the then Gongola State.

Upon completion of his Youth Service, Mr. Kawu took appointment with the Niger State Ministry of Justice as State Counsel.

In 1989 Mr Kawu resigned his appointment to go into private legal practice. Two years later he established his legal firm of Umaru Kawu & Co.

Between 1999 and 2007, Mr. Kawu served as the Attorney General of Niger State

Upon disengagement as a Civil Commissioner, Mr. Kawu resumed his private legal practice until his appointment as Director, Administration, SON in 2009.

In 2011 he was reassigned to head the Legal Department as Director, Legal Services.

Mr. Kawu is an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association and served as the Chairman of the Minna Branch of the Bar Association in 1999.

While in the University, Mr. Kawu was the recipient of the prize for the best student in Criminal Law in the Faculty of Law ABU, Zaria, 1981-82 academic session.

Mr. Kawu is an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association and served as the Chairman of the Minna Branch of the Bar Association in 1999.

Mr. Kawu is married with children and has attended several course within and outside Nigeria. Mr. Kawu’s hobbies include reading, current affairs, and golf.
