Engr. Bede Egwu Obayi, a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers graduated from the Anambra State University of Technology (Now Enugu State University of Technology, ESUT) with a Bachelor of Engineering 1986 with specialisation in metallurgical and materials engineering.

An alumnus of the Central School, Ede-Oballa, and Adada Secondary School both in Nsukka, Engr. Obayi undertook the National Youth Service Corps with Makeri Smelting Co. Ltd., Jos, and joined the services of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria in 1988 as Standards Engineer II.

He has held several key appointments like Assistant National Ports Coordinator; Zonal Coordinator, Jos Zonal Office; Technical Coordinator, Engineering Laboratory, Enugu; Head, Product Registration; Group Head, Mechanical Department; National Ports/Borders/Enforcement Coordinator; Regional Coordinator, South East/South-South; Director/Head, Inspectorate and Compliance and currently Director, National Metrology Institute, Enugu since July 2018.

Engr. Obayi is a Lead Auditor, ISO 9000 Quality Management System, a Certified Auditor, ISO 17025 Laboratory Accreditation and Management, and also holds a NUSESA Certificate on Laboratory Management from Lesotho, South Africa. He has attended several training programmes within and outside the country.

He is the SON Representative on the Governing Council of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).

Engr. Obayi’s hobbies include travelling and gardening. He is married with children.
