Mr. Umar Yakubu is the Head of the General Services Department at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Maiduguri, obtained in 1992, and is a certified ISO Auditor.
He began his career with SON on the 5th of March, 1997 as a Standards Officer II to carry out Quality Assurance activities in Lagos Zonal Office, Kofo Aabayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos.
He was later deployed to the Product Certification Unit in 2001 in Lekki. In 2005, he transitioned to the SONCAP unit and was later posted to Abuja to establish the SONCAP Unit. He Over the years, he has held various leadership roles, including serving as the State Coordinator for the Gombe and FCT Offices and overseeing Technical and State Office activities in the North Central Regional Directorate.
In September 2023, he was appointed Head of the Product Registration Division before returning to the North Central Regional Office in January 2024. Now, as the Head of the General Services Department, he continues to contribute to SON’s mission of promoting consumer confidence and global competitiveness of Nigerian products and services through standardization and quality assurance.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Yakubu enjoys reading, exploring different cuisines, and sports—particularly football and tennis.
