In its efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s Urban Planning Regulations and Standards, the Director General/ Chief Executive of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke led a delegation for a meeting with the International Organization for Standardization /International Electrotechnical Commission Joint Technical Committee 1/Working Group 11 (ISO/IECJTC 1/WG 311) Smart Cities in Australia.
The objective of the meeting is to provide SON with access to international frameworks and best practices for ensuring quality and safety in urban development. The Director General noted that by integrating these standards into local urban planning and construction processes, SON intends to strengthen its regulatory framework to combat the use of substandard building materials in the country.
During the meeting, the Director General discussed issues regarding holistic urban development, supported by advanced ICT solutions that will enable better monitoring and enforcement of compliance with building standards. Deliberations during the meeting also elaborately explored the adoption of innovative technologies for testing and certi certification of construction materials.
Through these efforts, SON will be better equipped to address the root causes of building collapse, enhance public safety, and support the development of resilient and sustainable urban spaces.
