Mr. Yunusa B. Mohammed, fondly known as YB, is the Head of Standards Development at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). A Biochemistry graduate of Bayero University, Kano, he brings over two decades of experience in standardisation, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Mohammed began his career as an analyst in SON’s Food and Chemistry Laboratory, where he built a strong foundation in analytical and laboratory practices. He is a certified Lead Auditor with specialization in Food Safety Management Systems and Quality Management Systems, and he is also trained as an ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratory Assessor. His technical expertise has been instrumental in the elaboration of national standards, particularly in the area of food safety and fortification.
He played a key role in establishing the Vitamin A Laboratory and has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s food fortification initiatives. His leadership extends to several national and international platforms, where he serves in the following capacities:
- Vice Chair, National Fortification Alliance
- Member, Regulatory Core Group
- Member, National Technical Advisory Group on Large-Scale Food Fortification (LSFF)
- Member, Country Working Group on Bouillon Fortification
- Head, National Codex Contact Point
- Head, Codex, Nutrition, and Tobacco Monitoring Division
- Member, Governance, Policy, and Strategy Committee of ARSO
Throughout his career, Mr. Mohammed has led numerous audits and conformity assessments to ensure adherence to food safety and quality standards. He has served as Inspector, Supervisor, and Port Coordinator at major ports of entry, and also as a State Coordinator in various SON State Offices.
He continues to advocate for the development and implementation of standards that improve public health, industry compliance, and product competitiveness. His work is driven by a passion for excellence, backed by participation in several local and international capacity-building programs, workshops, and trainings.
