SON TRAINS MANUFACTURERS IN ANAMBRA ON STANDARDS OPERATING PROCEDURES
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Monday trained representatives from 170 manufacturing companies in Anambra on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
The one-day training was held in Awka.
Mrs Nwaoma Olujie, Coordinator of SON in Anambra, said the event was meant to help firms develop proper documentation of SOP.
Olujie said though most manufacturing firms had standard procedures, they had no proper documentation to ensure continuity.
“SOP is a specified way of doing things, most of the companies here do not have documented operating procedure.
“It is good for practices to be documented to ensure continuity of processes.
“Quality assurance deals with process and quality control deals with products, so it cuts across the entire quality management system and representatives can be anybody in the firm who is directly involved,” she said.
The Coordinator said there was need for Nigerian firms to step up their quality, to boost their competitiveness in the global market.
She urged the manufacturers to ensure that the quality of raw materials met the required standard to guarantee the quality of finished products.
“The only non tariff factor that can grant you free access to international market is standard and quality; you must ensure that your raw material quality is standard; because it is garbage in garbage out”.
“SON is here to set and ensure standard for firms in the country,” she said.
One of the participants, Mr Jude Nwokolo, Production Manager at KP beverages, said it was a worthwhile experience.
Nwokolo said he would take back the message of logging and batching to his firm to upgrade their process management.
He thanked the SON for the training, adding that he was sure that firms in Anambra would become better improved.
