In its efforts to promote safety and quality in the energy sector, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) presented 80 newly approved Nigerian Industrial Standards for Compressed Natural Gas Road Vehicles and Related Appliances to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) in the SON Corporate Headquarters in Abuja yesterday.

The Director General/ Chief Executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke presented eighty (80) Standards and Guidelines for Compressed Natural Gas Road Vehicle and related appliances approved by the Honorable Minister, Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka – Anite to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative,

Led by the Programme Director/Chief Executive, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, the committee received the standards which encompass a wide range of technical specifications and requirements, including CNG Conversion kit, standards for electrical connections and vehicle diagnostics, standards for road-worthiness and Vehicle safety, standards for CNG storage vessels, and standards for CNG refueling stations, as well as guideline for installation of specific components to support the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicle propulsion.

In his remarks, the SON helmsman stated that the presentation of the standards by SON is the beginning of the journey towards safer, more reliable, cheaper, environmentally sustainable, and most importantly alternative fuel utilization  across our nation for road vehicles and other CNG-related appliances.”

The Director General stressed that SON’s commitment to excellence and innovation in line with international best practices has culminated in the development and approval of these standards, which represent a significant milestone in SON’s efforts to promote safety and quality in the energy sector.

Dr. Okeke explained that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative is a component of the palliative intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and one of the many steps taken by the president to ensure his Renewed Hope Agenda is enjoyed by every Nigerian. He called on all the relevant stakeholders and the public to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a better and sustainable future for our nation.

In presenting an overview of the newly approved Standards, the SON Director, Standards Development, Engr. Yahya Bukar, explained that SON was tasked to develop and deliver these standards within a limited time frame, a challenge the organisation under the guidance of the SON Director General/Chief Executive was able to achieve.

He thanked all the industry experts, regulators, academics, and other relevant stakeholders who worked hard with SON to achieve this feat.

In his response, the Programme Director, PCNGI, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, commended SON for working hard to ensure that the 80 standards were developed and approved speedily. He stated that the effort by SON to develop these standards imbibes the vision of the president to make life better for Nigerians.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative committee comprises of relevant regulatory agencies such as the National Mid-Stream Down-stream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Ministry of Finance Incorporation (MOFI), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other key stakeholders.
