To strategically boost Staff performance in the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for optimal Performance, a two-day brainstorming session with Regional Directors was recently held in Lagos.

In his welcome address to participants, the Director-General of SON, Mallam Farouk A. Salim reminded them of the need to review and carry out a critical assessment of their performance and evaluate their strengths, shore up their weaknesses, and identify opportunities for improvement.

The DG SON said the purpose of the strategic session was to identify and address critical lapses, success factors, and new initiatives which will drive upward the revenue-generating power of the Organisation and the need to initiate and improve on mentoring staff under their purview.

According to the DG, this will ensure continuity in the Organisation and bridge the gap as in the case of retirement, which is inevitable.

The SON helmsman reiterated that there had been issues of Staff being absent from work and that the onus lies on the Regional Directors, who are managers and mini DG’s, to mete out disciplinary actions as due diligence must be initiated and emphasized by all.

The Chief of Staff to the DG SON, Prof Olobayo Kunle, in a presentation, talked on the need for adequate collaboration among the Regional Directorates to be a collective unit with a common goal of moving the organisation forward.

This, he said, will enable SON to take its rightful place in the global scheme of things, especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) sets off.

At the discussion segment, issues raised were bothered on
• Revenue generation (MANCAP, Product Registration & Commercialisation of the Laboratories.)
• Sensitization and Awareness creation
• Enforcement
• Training
• Establishing new marketing strategies.

Other papers were presented by the Director of Human Resource Management, Barr. Umaru Kawu: Director, Finance, and Accounts: Mr. Aaron Tam George, Director South-West Operations; Mrs. Talatu Ethan and Head MANCAP; Dr. Samuel Ayuba.

In closing the event, the SON’s helmsman congratulated participants for a successful deliberation stating that a lot of work still needs to be done as the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeks to reduce agencies collecting funds and so wishes SON to place focus towards the MANCAP certification scheme.
