The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is consistently working to improve its status as a business enabler through its mandate of improving life through Standardisation. In a statement issued by Mrs. Foluso Bolaji, Director of Public Relations, she hinted that the Director General, Mallam Farouk Salim authorised a team to partner and interface with relevant agencies and stakeholders to develop an operational framework for the kick-off of the Halal industry in Nigeria. 

Mallam Farouk, represented by Mrs. Amina Haliru (Head, Halal Desk), in her remarks at the validation meeting of the Final Draft Report on the roadmap and operational framework for the development of Halal Industry in Nigeria which was held recently at Garki, Abuja, emphasized the crucial role of Standardisation to achieve the set goal.

He further gave a detailed analysis of the steps taken by SON to ensure that a globally accepted Standard is developed or adopted for Nigeria’s Halal Industry to ensure that products and services meet the right specifications as well as deliver on consumers’ expectations which will allow for access and acceptance in international markets.

Regarding the roadmap and milestones outlined by the committee to get a functioning Halal Industry in Nigeria, Salim noted that getting it from the inception will open Nigeria to the world, with the ripple effect being a boost for Nigeria’s economy internally and externally because the Halal global market is being valued at trillions of Dollars.

The Keynote speaker Ambassador Maryam Katagum, the Honourable Minister of State of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, applauded the committee on the strides achieved thus far. She noted that the kick-off of the Industry would be a valuable tool in the Ministry’s mandate of facilitating trade and growing the Nigerian Industrial Sector and assured of the Ministry’s continuous support.

Participants include representatives from The Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment (FMITI), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigeria National Accreditation System (NINAS), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN), other SON officials among others.
