Purpose

The Library Services serves as a research and reference point for standard information to staff, government agencies, business entrepreneurs and consumers including the international community on standardization activities.

Scope

Mandate of Library Services (LS) "shall assemble, maintain and extend a collection of books and publications (standards/ normative documents) and such other matters as it considers appropriate for a standards library of the highest standing and make the facilities of the library available to such categories of persons as it thinks fit and upon such terms and conditions as it considers necessary".

Overview

The SON Library Services was established by the Enabling Act 56, subsection 5 of 1971, with responsibility to assemble and maintain collection of standards (normative documents), books and other relevant materials it considers appropriate for standard library.

To Build and sustain Library services of high standing for Standard Development in Nigeria.
 

Procedure

The SON Library Services procedure is a professional administrative, management processes and rules established to guide the activities of the information providers and users on the permissible and non- permissible rights and obligations in the business of standard information generation and dissemination by the stakeholders.
It provides for the rules of engagement in accessing and assessing the library services as detailed in in the following pages.
 

Library Quality Objective

  • Provision an appropriate means and facilities for generation, documentation, preservation and dissemination of information on standards and standard related matters at both national and international levels;
  • Cataloging and classification of standards and other library materials within 7 working days of taking delivery;
  • Documentation and publishing of standards related publications on demand;
  • Promotion and marketing of national and international standard information to stakeholders at conference at office locations, conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions.

List of SON Publications

  • NIGERIAN INDUSTRIAL STANDARDS: There are over 1000 published Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) covering different products (goods and services) from different human Endeavour. Prices vary depending upon the particular standard and number of pages. However, the minimum standard price N2000.00 per copy.
  • SON STANDARD CATALOGUE: This publication is the database of all SON Nigerian Industrial Standard list at periodic intervals usually one calendar year. It is for sale.
  • STANDARDS FOR CASSAVA PRODUCTS AND GUIDELINES FOR EXPORT:
  • SON JOURNAL: This is a monthly technical journal of SON that contains research articles relevant to the activities of the Organization, technical papers delivered at conferences, seminars, and workshops relevant to standards, quality assurance and metrology. Price is free.
  • ANNUAL REPORT: This is a yearly report of the operations of the Organization over the preceding year. Price: Free.
  • SON IN BRIEF: Summarizes the profiles and activities SON. Price is free.
  • QUALITY ASSUARANCE AND FACTORY INSPECTION PROCEDURE GUIDELINES: Reflects activities in quality assurance and is free publication.
  • MANCAP IN BRIEF: This is the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme brief outlining the requirements of the scheme and is free.
  • SON IMPORT/EXPORT INSPECTION GUIDELINES: This is handbook is intended to educate all port users on their relationship with SON and is free.
  • ACCREDITATION AND CERTIFICATION OF LABORATORIES HANDBOOK: This highlights the roles of ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 9001:2008 on independent accreditation bodies and is free.
  • THE NIS CERTIFICATION MARK: This is a small pamphlet introducing the essential procedure and benefits of NIS mark to interested manufacturers.
  • REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CERTIFICATION MARK: This is another small pamphlet that specifies essential in-plant quality control system requirements to be met by manufacturers, seeking to be certified.
