In line with its mandate to improve lives through standardization and quality assurance, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is set to beam its searchlight into the Facilities Management sector with the ultimate goal of ensuring that standards are adhered to in all areas of the industry.
The Director-General SON, Mallam Farouk Salim made this known during the maiden edition of the ISO 41001: 2018 Facility Management course held at the Training Room of the SON laboratory complex in Lagos.
The DG who was represented by the Director of Training Services Engr Timothy Abner applauded the trainees for being among the few selected to participate in the training, consisting of the Implementation course and the Auditor’s course.
Salim emphasised that the training, which is based on the Management Systems Standards is structured such that it outlines how to plan, implement and check if what a facility is designated for is actualized and when actualized can be reviewed as the need arises.
According to him, the Standards would be beneficial to professionals and stakeholders who managed facilities as it prescribes laid down requirements concerning how to manage a facility.
The SON helmsman reiterated that one of the goals of SON aside from creating awareness of the Standards is to build National Competence, which will in turn help stakeholders know how to manage facilities for a longer lifespan with the knowledge helping to curb waste resulting from lack of maintenance,
The DG also revealed that the Facility Management standard will help to ensure that there are laid down guidelines on how Facility Management is deployed and what a built environment should look like, with all safety measures put in place and working efficiently.
The SON boss urged all the trainees to put in their best to ensure that the program is successful to build competence and capacity within the Organisation in implementation and Auditing, promising that there would be another training programme to be scheduled to take place in Kano in a short while.
