The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigeria Army have commenced the process of collaboration to ensure that the quality of all products procured by the latter meet requirements of relevant Nigeria Industrial Standards and other approved specifications.
The initiative which was at the instance of the Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps was cemented at an interactive meeting of the Management of SON led by the Director General, Mr. Osita Aboloma and a 7-man delegation of the Corps led by Brigadier General Patrick Eze at the SON Operations Office Lekki, Lagos.
According to Brigadier General Eze, the Nigerian Army is at the forefront in the patronage of local industries for the sourcing of military items in line with the policy of the Federal Government. He stressed that the Ordinance Corps has the responsibility of ensuring that such items are of approved standards and meets Nigerian Army specifications, which informed its exploratory call on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.
Responding, Mr. Aboloma commended the initiative of the Nigeria Army Ordinance Corps and stated that armed forces personnel have in the past participated actively in the development of some Nigeria Industrial Standards such as the specification for Nigerian Armed Forces Drill Fabric.
He disclosed that SON has in stock Nigeria Industrial Standards covering multitude of products including food, agro and allied, textile and leather, engineering as well as chemical technology materials, citing examples of some that can be tailored to the specific need of the armed forces such as standards for berets, uniforms and safety foot wears among others.
A committee of SON personnel was agreed to be constituted to liaise with the Nigerian Army Ordinance Corp team to form a joint committee for the review of existing collaboration and to appraise the specific needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces with a view to meeting them.
The SON Director General then presented copies of some published standards to the leader of the Army Ordinance Corps team including, Specification for Nigerian Armed Forces Drill Fabric; Standard specification for safety foot wears; Specification for Nigeria National Flag among others.
