Nigeria is set to enhance its collaboration with the Kingdom of Netherlands on electronic certification of agricultural and allied products as well as value addition for export.

A resolution to this effect was arrived at during a fact finding visit of a delegation from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria’s (SON) in Lagos.

Leader of the Netherlands delegation, Mr. Bernadus (Benno) Slot stated that the visit was also to have a better understanding of the SON activities and seek ways of collaboration on e-certification, client system and value addition to agro-allied products export to the Netherlands.

According to him, this is aimed at facilitating future cooperation between the SON and the Netherlands Foods and Consumer Product Safety Authority, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

Responding, SON Director, Standards Development, Mrs. Chinyere Egwuonwu remarked that the organisation’s off-shore certification processes are fully electronic the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) for locally manufactured products is also in the process of computerization to create a completely seamless electronic process that will further aid the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

According to Mrs. Egwuonwu, SON’s primary function is standardisation which includes certification, accreditation and testing services, all aimed at adding value to products, services and systems for local and international competitiveness. She disclosed that SON has in its electronic catalogue, agricultural and agro-allied standards and codes of practices to help boost the Federal Government’s export drive.

The Director, Standards Development stated that the fact-finding visit was a welcome development and assured the Netherland’s delegation of SON’s preparedness to promote a mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations in the area of standardization and quality assurance.

The visiting team led by Sonia Fajusigbe, the Advisor, Economic, Trade and Investment Affairs of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, had Mr. Bernadus (Benno) Slot, Head of Unit, Netherlands Foods and Consumer Product Safety Authority and Alexander J. Moret, a Specialist Advisor.

On hand to receive the delegation alongside the Director Standards Development were SON Director, Laboratory Services, Mrs Mojisola Kehinde, the Head, Food Laboratory, Mrs. Yeside Akinlabi, Head, Electrical Laboratory, Mr. Richard Adewumi and Head, MANCAP, Engr. Fred Akingbesote.
