The Nigerian Government is to host the 69th Council meeting of the Africa Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) in November, 2023 and its General Assembly meeting in June 2024.

Preceding the two-International event, the government will Co-host ARSO Webinar Sessions scheduled for August 2023 with the theme, “Trade Barriers in Agricultural Trade.”

Speaking recently, the Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) Malam Farouk Salim who led Nigeria’s delegation to the 29th ARSO General Assembly in Kinshasa, Democratic of Congo said his Agency is committed to support in the development and implementation of a robust and integrated African Standardisation System.

Salim says despite SON’s decision to ensure ARSO’s sustainability programs through various Standards, the Organization hopes to ingrain and instill building quality culture as well as contribute to the industrialization of Africa by creating easy access to standardization information.

The SON boss noted that the theme for the 68th ARSO Council, “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area Implementation – One Standard- One Test – One Certification Accepted Everywhere,” was apt, stating that the direct adoption of the approved ARS of 75 final draft African standards, 7 Guidelines, 5 ACAP and 65 Non-ARS Standards including the two-certification scheme was in tandem with the vision of the standards body.

Meanwhile, the Director General Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Malam Farouk Salim, had discussed areas of partnership at a sideline meeting with the representatives of Singapore Enterprise and Somalia Bureau of Standards and explored opportunities to improve standardization and conformity assessment activities.

The meeting was aimed at fostering partnership and collaboration on standardization activities and extending invitations to the African Singapore Business forum platform for the exchange of trade and business, Capacity Building, as well as seeking for Nigeria’s support for the ISO Council membership election for the 2024-2026 Term of Office.

In the same vein, the meeting with the Somalia Bureau of Standards was on potential cooperation between the two Bodies.

Highlights of the event, so the 3 Winners of the 2022/2023 ARSO Essay competition unveiled with Babalola Segun Samson from Nigeria clinching the first prize, while Frank Omwoyo of Kenya and Ndamase Zona of South Africa came 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
