The recent training of Staff of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on the Educational Organisation Management Standards by the SON Training Services Directorate has been considered a game-changer that is set to revolutionise the education sector towards better quality and standards in line with international best practices.

The Director-General Standards organisation of Nigeria, Mallam Salim Farouk made this known during the inauguration of the Educational Organisations Management Systems ISO 21001: 2018 Validation/Implementation course for members of staff held at the training room of SON laboratory complex in Ogba, Lagos.

The DG represented by the Director of SON Training Services Engr Timothy Abner stated that the Standard is a management Systems Standard which provides guidelines and establishes processes in the areas of teaching, training, learning and educational administration, for optimal impact.

According to Salim, the standards are targeted at the educational sector, ranging from schools, tertiary institutions, training facilities, and vocational centres to academic professional bodies etc.

The DG reiterated that the importance of the standards cannot be overemphasized as it stipulates the minimum requirements for educational institutions on quality educational management systems.

“By providing how best to run these organisations, through quality practices such as keeping proper documentation in line with international best practices and to harmonize education development across the board in Nigeria,” he said.

The SON helmsman added that the standards would help bridge systemic gaps and help to boost the capacity of our educational institutions by gaining global recognition for our institutions in the country.

According to Salim, “the destroying a nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long-range missiles, it only requires the lowering of education quality and allowing uncouth actions such as cheating in examination by students, or not adhering to standard teaching practices by educational providers for a nation to be destroyed”.

He added further that “the collapse of the education system is the collapse of a nation, therefore, the introduction and the implementation of Educational Management Systems Standards will help in no small measure to revamp the fallen standards in the Educational sector in the country”

Salim also disclosed that after the Implementation/validation training, there will be an audit course to follow shortly and urged Staff to put in their best towards uplifting this critical sector of our national life.
