As part of efforts to extol the remarkable achievements of notable alumnus of the Pharmaceutical Dept. of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS-ABU Chapter) honoured the Director General (DG), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim with an induction into its prestigious Hall of Fame in Zaria recently.

Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. Ahmed Tijani Mora Grand Patron ABU-PANS in his opening remarks highlighted the notable professional achievements of the SON Boss as a seasoned international pharmacist and administrator. He furthermore, applauded Salim for being the first alumnus to be appointed as DG of SON

In his Keynote Speech, Mallam Salim reminisced on his days as a student and encouraged the students to keep striving to better the Pharmaceutical field in Nigeria. He also advised them to use this period to explore, socialize and invest in positive relationships that will impact their future.

Salim cited his relationship with his current Chief of Staff (COS) Prof. Kunle Olobayo and his Special Assistant (SA), Special Duties, Mr. Emeka Duru both alumnus of the Pharmaceutical Department of ABU as examples of friends with whom he has maintained great personal andv professional relationships with from undergraduate days till date.

The SON Boss went on to educate the audience on the mandate of SON its functions, standards development, importance of conforming to standards and also metrology and equipment calibration and how it relates to the pharmaceutical profession.

“In SON we have a National Metrology Institute-what they do is to ensure all measurement equipment are accurate, we calibrate everything from your scales in the lab, to your scales in the industry, to weighing bridges on the road, we calibrate all these and more to ensure measurements are accurate to save lives and scarce resources” he said.

Salim stated further that “as pharmacists you know why measurement and calibration is important? If you take an average muscle relaxant and multiply the dose by ten times or by half, you have a dead patient therefore, the importance of accurate measurement can never be over emphasized”.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of plaques to the new PANS-ABU Hall of Famers and a vote of thanks by PANS-ABU President- Mr Huzaifa Muhammad
