SON, NAFDAC ENHANCE OPERATIONAL SYNERGY

As part of efforts to enhance operational synergy  and deliver more effective and efficient services to Nigerians, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and National Agency for Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have instituted a joint committee to harmonise operational procedures.
Speaking at a meeting of the Committee  hosted by SON during the week, the Director General, Osita Aboloma Esq. urged the members to explore areas of cooperation and collaboration to engender more efficient delivery of services to stakeholders and a faster turn around time.
Represented by Barr. Richard Agu, a Director,  the SON Chief Executive admonished the Committee to examine areas of overlaps in their service delivery to stakeholders with a view to streamlining them for greater value addition.
According to him, the two agencies’ commitment  to the Presidential Executive Order on Ease of Doing Business must be apparent in more efficient and less cumbersome service delivery devoid of multiple taxation of stakeholders.
The Committee’s deliberations centred on harmonization of inspection procedures for product certification and registration; the HS Codes guiding regulation of imported products, service charges for Food products and water as well as sampling.
Others include the perception of the two agencies as competitors rather than collaborators by stakeholders and staff.
The Committee resolved among others to promote cooperation and collaboration among the two agencies’ staff nationwide;  make deliberate efforts to sensitize and educate stakeholders on the complementary nature of their mandates and international best practises; streamline areas of perceived duplication of efforts and continue to find common ground for greater value addition in service delivery to Nigerians.
A 4-man sub- committee was set up to examine past attempts at streamlining the HS Codes for regulation of imported products with a view to resolving grey areas concerning chemicals for recommendation to the Chief Executives of both agencies for adoption.
The Committee comprised key Directors, Technical and Special Assistants to both Chief Executives and Heads of Departments involved in  product certification and registration as well as import regulations. It adjourned sitting to reconvene within one month.
